Old World Architecture – Filippo Brunelleschi 1377 – 1446

~Old World Architecture – Filippo Brunelleschi 1377 – 1446~
Considered to be a founding father of Renaissance architecture, Filippo Brunelleschi was an Italian architect and designer who is recognized as being the first modern engineer, planner, and sole construction supervisor. Famous for designing the dome of the Florence Cathedral, a feat of engineering that had not been accomplished since antiquity, as well as the development of the mathematical technique of linear perspective in art which governed pictorial depictions of space until the late 19th century and influenced the rise of modern science. Brunelleschi’s first architectural commission was the Ospedale degli Innocenti (1419–c. 1445), or Foundling Hospital, designed as a home for orphans. He worked along Michelangelo in the Basilica of San Lorenzo project. During that phase, he also designed parts of the Basilica of Santo Spirito, Pazzi Chapel, and the Santa Maria degli Angeli.
